As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 197.83 points, or 0.88 percent, from Thursday to 22,290.11.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, fell 10.57 points, or 0.62 percent, to 1,681.84.
Oil and coal product, mining, and electric appliance-linked issues comprised notable decliners in early trade.
