Tokyo stocks closed lower Friday as tech issues slumped following the Nasdaq's retreat overnight and along with a firm yen, while remarks reportedly made by U.S. President Donald Trump about Japan's trade deficit with the U.S. also soured the market mood.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 180.88 points, or 0.80 percent, from Thursday to close the day at 22,307.06.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, dropped 8.10 points, or 0.48 percent, to finish at 1,684.31.
Electric appliance, oil and coal product, and metal product-linked issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play
