Tokyo stocks opened higher Tuesday as the yen's softer tone versus the U.S. dollar encouraged investors to buyback issues oversold the previous day when the Nikkei closed almost 1.9 percent lower.
As of 9:15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 39.78 points, or 0.18 percent, from Monday to 22,311.08.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 2.68 points, or 0.16 percent, at 1,678.12.
Mining, real estate, and information and communication-oriented issues comprised those that gained the most in the early minutes after the opening bell.
