Tokyo stocks closed marginally higher on Wednesday in choppy trade as bargain hunting following the Nikkei's four-day losing streak took the upper hand despite renewed tariff remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump dampening the market mood.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 36.65 points, or 0.16 percent, from Tuesday to close the day at 23,506.04.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 2.74 points, or 0.16 percent, to finish at 1,763.86.

Mining, farm and fishery, and consumer credit-oriented issues comprised those that gained the most by the close of play.
