Tokyo stocks opened flat Friday, as investors both sold for profits on the back of the Nikkei's recent gains and bought based on solid earnings reports and outlooks by domestic firms.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 2.26 points, or 0.01 percent, from Thursday to 22,484.66.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, edged 1.90 points, or 0.11 percent, higher at 1,683.15.

Land transportation, farm and fishery, and warehouse and harbor transportation service issues led notable gainers, while major decliners comprised oil and coal product, nonferrous metal and mining-linked issues.
