Tokyo stocks closed lower on Tuesday as investors opted to lock in profits amid renewed concerns about the health of the global economy.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 96.42 points, or 0.47 percent, from Monday to close the day at 20,622.91.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, fell 9.94 points, or 0.63 percent, lower at 1,556.43.
Oil and coal, metals, and iron and steel producer-linked issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play.
