Tokyo stocks retreated Thursday morning as the Dow Jones Industrial Average closing lower overnight dented investor sentiment, while weaker-than-expected factory output data here weighed on tech issues.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 74.85 points, or 0.35 percent, from Wednesday to 21,481.66.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, fell 5.40 points, or 0.33 percent, at 1,615.02.
Marine transportation, electric appliance and miscellaneous product-linked issues comprised those that declined the most by the morning break.
