Tokyo stocks open higher on eased concerns over Middle East tensions

TOKYO, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks bounced back opening sharply higher Thursday as the market mood was bolstered by U.S. shares advancing overnight and the yen's retreat against the U.S. dollar amid eased concerns over tensions in the Middle East.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 384.29 points, or 1.66 percent, from Wednesday to 23,589.05.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 21.78 points, or 1.28 percent, at 1,723.18.

Marine transportation, machinery and precision instrument-linked issues comprised those that gained the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
