TOKYO, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened sharply lower Tuesday when investors offloaded issues as a global equities rout triggered a risk averse mood.
As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average tumbled 875.62 points, or 3.74 percent, from Friday to 22,511.12.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, plunged 62.15 points, or 3.71 percent, at 1,611.85.
All industry categories retreated into negative territory, with marine transportation, mining and securities house-linked issues comprising those that declined the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
Markets here were closed on Monday for a national holiday.
