TOKYO, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks ended essentially flat Monday, as investors both bought on expectations for the central bank's purchases of exchange-traded funds and on continued concerns over rising numbers of global coronavirus cases.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average edged up 21.06 points, or 0.09 percent, from Friday to close the day at 22,717.48.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, ended the day 3.18 points or 0.20 percent higher at 1,577.03.

Securities house and machinery issues comprised notable gainers, while air transportation and land transportation issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play.
