The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.45 percent lower at 12,172.91 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices came in at about 966.1 billion yuan (about 151.43 billion U.S. dollars), expanding from 935.6 billion yuan on the previous trading day.
Shares in education and traditional Chinese medicine sectors were among the top gainers, while shares related to photovoltaic and semiconductor saw losses.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 1.24 percent to close at 2,633.91 points Wednesday.
