The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 234.21 points, or 0.60 percent, to 38,763.45. The S&P 500 sank 40.53 points, or 0.77 percent, to 5,199.5. The Nasdaq Composite Index shed 171.05 points, or 1.05 percent, to 16,195.81.
Seven of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in red, with consumer discretionary and materials leading the laggards by losing 1.44 percent and 1.39 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, utilities and energy led the gainers by rising 0.55 percent and 0.46 percent, respectively.
