Xinhua News Agency President Cai Mingzhao expressed on Friday Xinhua's desire to make joint efforts in backing intellectual property (IP) rights protection through joint training, organised public activities and other aspects of cooperation.

In a meeting with World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Director General Francis Gurry, Cai said that as China's state news agency, news and information products are created daily through information gathering and the dissemination of innovative technologies. "We have many good stories about China and WIPO, and the stories are getting better and better," Gurry noted. "We have strong relations with China, the Beijing office is one of the five across the world and China contributes much to the organization. China has played an increasing role in global innovation with its improved innovation ability and awareness of IP," he added. Gurry also appreciated the organization's deep collaboration with Xinhua, saying that he will push for more cooperation in the future.

According to Cai, Xinhua News Agency's branches across the world will strive to provide full coverage of WIPO and its related activities, so as to raise public awareness about the issue of intellectual property rights protection. This is important in light of China's recently issued 13th Five-Year Plan for economic and social development, which places particular weight on the development of innovation. In this context, intellectual property rights protection for innovative products is especially relevant, Cai said.

The latest WIPO report revealed that, with over 2,400 applications last year, China filed the most international trademark applications under the Madrid System since becoming a member. The country ranks seventh among all filers. In 2015 the global number of patent applications submitted under the WIPO "Patent Cooperation Treaty" framework increased by 1.7 percent over the previous year. Among them, the United States submitted a total of about 57,400 applications while Japan and China came in the second and third with 44,200 and some 29,800 applications respectively.
