DALEY CONTINUES STRONG RELATIONSHIP WITH CHINESE AUSTRALIAN COMMUNITY, WILL FIGHT FOR HIGH QUALITY PUBLIC TRANSPORT, HEALTH AND EDUCATION
SYDNEY, 16 Nov 2018 (XFA) -- NSW Opposition Leader Michael Daley said he looked forward to continuing his strong and long standing relationship with the Chinese Australian community in his first week as Labor Leader.
Mr Daley said he understood how important public transport, education and health were to the Chinese Australian community.
In his first week as leader, Mr Daley announced that he would make public transport free for school age children.
Mr Daley said that the cost of public transport for children is making life harder for families who are already struggling with higher power bills, higher tolls and more state taxes under the Berejiklian Liberal Government.
Under the current rules primary school-aged children are eligible for free travel only when travelling to and from school, and if their home is more than 2.3 kilometres away by walking, rising to 2.9 kilometres for secondary school-aged children.
Labor’s Fair Fares policy recognises these restrictive and arbitrary conditions make it harder for families, and for children doing after school activities or weekend sport.
Free bus and train travel will also encourage children to use public transport more and ease congestion on Sydney’s already clogged roads.
Mr Daley said that NSW Labor would always stand firm in its support for the Chinese Australian community and for multiculturalism in NSW and he said that he had always enjoyed working with the Chinese Australian community in his electorate of Maroubra.
Mr Daley said that this was why engagement with the Chinese Australian Media is important.
Quotes attributable to NSW Opposition Leader Michael Daley:
“I understand how important good public transport, education and health services are to the Chinese Australian community. I know that Chinese Australians want the best possible opportunities for their children, and they want a health system that provides quality care to their families.
A Daley Labor Government will make life easier for families struggling with higher power bills and higher tolls by making public transport free for all school age children.
Ever since I became the member for Maroubra, I have always enjoyed working with the strong and successful Chinese Australian community in my electorate.
The Chinese Australian community have made an enormous contribution to NSW for almost 200 years. NSW Labor will always support multiculturalism, and will always support the Chinese Australian community.” (END)
