WASHINGTON, April 15 (Xinhua) -- A U.S. anti-tariff farm group on Monday sent a letter to U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, requesting that the U.S. government reimburse the American people for their losses related to tariffs the country imposed on products from its trading partners.

The Farmers for Free Trade group said that its nationwide "Tariffs Hurt the Heartland" campaign teamed up with a non-profit organization The Taxpayers Protection Alliance in "reminding the administration that tariffs are taxes paid by Americans."

"In light of the overwhelming evidence that Americans are paying the cost of these tariffs, our request is straightforward. Tariffs are taxes that American families and businesses pay," read the letter to Mnuchin.

Over the course of last year, the United States has levied punitive duties on steel and aluminum imports worldwide, and has threatened tariffs on imported vehicles and vehicle parts as well, citing "national security" concerns in justifying both measures.

Meanwhile, Washington has imposed additional tariffs on billions of Chinese imports, triggering similar moves from the Chinese side. The world's two largest economies are now in the process of finding a way out of their trade disputes.

"The notion that China, or any other country, has been footing the bill for these tariffs has been refuted by nearly every expert on trade, tariffs and economic policy," the letter said.

"Tariffs Hurt the Heartland" said in a statement that American families and businesses have paid an estimated 69 billion U.S. dollars in tariffs since 2018, which equates to more than 500 dollars for every U.S. household.
