HANOI, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam spent roughly 4.1 billion U.S. dollars importing nearly 6.1 million tons of steel and iron in the first five months of this year, up 0.7 percent in value and up 7.2 percent in volume against the same period last year, the Vietnam Steel Association said on Tuesday.

In May alone, the country imported 1.4 million tons of the products worth 950 million U.S. dollars, down 0.2 percent and down 7 percent, respectively.

The local steel sector imported 90-95 percent of materials for manufacturing, including iron ores, iron scraps, and coke fuel, mainly from China, South Korea and Japan, the association said.

In 2018, Vietnam poured nearly 9.9 billion U.S. dollars into importing roughly 13.6 million tons of steel and iron, down 9.6 percent in volume but up 9 percent in value on-year.

The country also raked in 4.6 billion U.S. dollars from exporting 6.3 million tons of the products, posting respective on-year surges of 44.8 percent and 33.5 percent, according to its General Statistics Office.
