The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 45.61 points, or 0.19 percent, from Thursday at 23,827.98.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, finished 4.84 points, or 0.28 percent, lower at 1,732.14.
Miscellaneous product, air transportation, and textile and apparel issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play.
