The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) added 4.27 points, or 0.24 percent, to trade at 1,775.71 in the first 50 minutes of trading.
The KOSPI began the trading 1.9 percent higher, but declined more than 1 percent lower minutes later, bobbing in and out of the negative territory.
South Korea's currency was quoted at 1,215.9 won against the U.S. dollar, up 3.3 won from the previous close.
