Burundi has extended quarantine to travelers from the United States, Britain and Australia to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, the country's health minister said here on Monday.

"As from March 17, passengers from the U.S., the UK and Australia or others who have stayed in those countries for 14 days and who are coming to Burundi will be quarantined to prevent the coronavirus from entering our country," said Thaddee Ndikumana in a press briefing.

Quarantine measures started to apply to travelers from European countries on Thursday.

Ndikumana added that after reports of the novel coronavirus outbreak in Rwanda on Sunday, the Burundian government decided to put in quarantine 261 people who had left Rwanda on Sunday and entered Burundi by road, some of them pupils and foreigners. But there was no suspected case among them.

He advised Burundian travelers to restrict their trips to countries that have already registered COVID-19 cases.

Ndikumana also urged Burundian people to abide by hygiene rules and avoid handshakes or hugs when greeting.
