Tokyo stocks opened sharply higher Thursday as investor sentiment was lifted by the European Central Bank announcing a 750 billion euro (820 billion U.S. dollars) asset purchasing program to help mitigate the downside economic effects caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 277.90 points, or 1.66 percent, from Wednesday to 17,004.45.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 28.30 points, or 2.23 percent, at 1,299.14.

Land transportation, pharmaceutical and precision instrument-oriented issues comprised those that gained the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
