Tokyo stocks opened sharply higher Wednesday after the Dow Jones Industrial Average booked its largest-ever points increase overnight, with sentiment also lifted by the Tokyo Olympics being postponed not cancelled.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average surged 918.56 points, or 5.08 percent, from Tuesday to 19,010.91.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 62.01 points, or 4.65 percent, at 1,395.11.

All industry categories advanced into positive territory, with marine transportation, nonferrous metal and mining issues comprising those that gained the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
