Tokyo stocks open slightly lower as pandemic concerns weigh

Tokyo stocks opened marginally lower on Tuesday, despite a positive lead from Wall Street overnight, as concerns over the global coronavirus pandemic continued to weigh on the market mood.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 15.53 points, or 0.08 percent, from Monday to 19,069.44.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 6.29 points, or 0.44 percent, at 1,429.25.

Iron and steel, real estate and textile and apparel issues comprised notable decliners in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
