U.S. COVID-19 cases surpass 6 mln -- Johns Hopkins University

BEIJING, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

NEW YORK -- The total number of COVID-19 cases in the United States surpassed 6 million on Monday, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.

U.S. COVID-19 case count rose to 6,002,615, with the national death toll reaching 183,203, as of 11:28 a.m. local time (1528 GMT), according to the CSSE.

TOKYO -- Japan on Monday reported 429 new daily coronavirus cases, bringing the nation's cumulative total to 68,516 infections not including those related to a cruise ship quarantined in Yokohama near Tokyo earlier in the year.

Of the new infections, 100 were confirmed in Tokyo, bringing the capital's total caseload to 20,817, the highest among Japan's 47 prefectures.

ADDIS ABABA -- The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) on Monday said that the number of positive COVID-19 cases across the African continent has risen to 1,245,230.

The Africa CDC, which noted that only five African countries account for about 70 percent of all COVID-19 infections in the continent, also stressed that the death toll from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic rose to 29,589 on Monday.

DUBAI -- The United Arab Emirates on Monday announced 541 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 70,231.

At the same time, 331 more patients have recovered from the virus, taking the tally of recoveries in the UAE to 60,931, the UAE's Ministry of Health and Prevention said.

BEIJING -- Chinese President Xi Jinping said Monday that as COVID-19 remains a pandemic and vaccines play a key role in humankind's victory over it, China stands ready to promote cooperation with Morocco on COVID-19 vaccine development and production.

Xi made the remarks in a telephone conversation in the night with Moroccan King Mohammed VI.
