Brazil's jobless number hits 12.9 million in August

RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- The number of people in the ranks of the unemployed in Brazil grew to 12.9 million in August, an increase of 27.6 percent compared to May, when 10.1 million Brazilians were jobless, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) said on Wednesday.

According to the agency's latest report, unemployment in August rose by 600,000 people compared to July, an increase of 0.5 percentage points.

During the eighth month of the year, the employed population grew by 0.8 percent compared to July, to reach 84.4 million people, but represented 2.7 percent fewer than in May.

Meanwhile, the size of the workforce went from 93.7 million in July to 95.1 million in August, an increase of 1.4 percent.
