U.S. dollar edges down amid economic data

NEW YORK, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. dollar inched lower in late trading on Thursday as market participants digested the newly-released jobless claims data.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, fell 0.04 percent at 93.6040.

In late New York trading, the euro decreased to 1.1758 U.S. dollars from 1.1765 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound was up to 1.2933 dollars from 1.2910 U.S. dollars in the previous session. The Australian dollar rose to 0.7163 U.S. dollar from 0.7140 dollar.

The U.S. dollar bought 106.01 Japanese yen, lower than 106.03 Japanese yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar fell to 0.9171 Swiss franc from 0.9172 Swiss franc, and it was down to 1.3199 Canadian dollars from 1.3267 Canadian dollars.

On the data front, U.S. initial jobless claims, a rough way to measure layoffs, stood at 840,000 in the week ending Oct. 3, following an upwardly revised 849,000 in the prior week, the Department of Labor reported on Thursday.

Economists polled by Dow Jones expected first-time claims for unemployment insurance to total 825,000 last week.
