SYDNEY, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Australian dollar edged higher on Tuesday ahead of a meeting by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), in which it was widely expected to reduce the official interest rate to effectively zero.

At 07:00 (AEST), the Australian dollar was buying 70.52 U.S. cents, up from 70.31 U.S. cents on Monday.

The Aussie jumped 0.20 U.S. cents before plateauing overnight, with the U.S. dollar mixed against major currencies.

At around 2:30 p.m. local time, the Australian central bank's decision on interest rates was due, with observers expecting a cut from 0.25 to 0.1 percent -- a fresh record low.

At 09:30 (AEST), the local unit was buying 70.53 U.S. cents.
