SINGAPORE, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Department of Statistics (DOS) of Singapore announced on Thursday that Singapore's retail sales decreased by 10.8 percent year on year in September, compared to the revised 5.4 percent year-on-year decline recorded in August.

DOS attributed the larger decline mainly to the computer and telecommunications equipment industry, which recorded lower sales of mobile phones compared to the high base in September 2019 when there were new mobile phone launches.

Compared to the previous month, seasonally adjusted retail sales decreased 4.5 percent this September, compared to the revised 1.8-percent increase in August.

The estimated total retail sales value in September was about 3.2 billion Singapore dollars (about 2.36 billion U.S. dollars). Of these, online retail sales made up an estimated 11.2 percent.

DOS also announced that the sales of food and beverage services decreased by 29.9 percent year on year in September, compared to the revised 28.1 percent decline in August.

On a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis, Singapore's sales of food and beverage services declined 1.2 percent in September. The sales value was estimated at 629 million Singapore dollars, of which the proportion of online sales hit an estimated 20.4 percent in September.
