SEOUL, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's online shopping recorded a double-digit growth in the second quarter as people still refrained from offline shopping amid the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, statistical office data showed Wednesday.

Shopping in the cyberspace amounted to 46.89 trillion won (40.9 billion U.S. dollars) in the April-June quarter, up 25.1 percent from a year earlier, according to Statistics Korea.

It marked the highest quarterly increase since data began to be compiled in 2001. The online shopping spiked 22.0 percent in the January-March quarter.

The double-digit expansion came as the continued pandemic discouraged people from shopping in offline stores.

Demand for food delivery services in the cyberspace advanced 58.7 percent, with the online purchase for food and beverage surging 34.4 percent in the second quarter.

Online demand for the travel and transport services and the culture and leisure services went up 43.4 percent and 61.3 percent each.

Meanwhile, the mobile shopping through smartphones reached 33.3 trillion won (29 billion U.S. dollars) during the second quarter, up 32.4 percent from a year earlier.
