SEOUL, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's imported car sale logged a double-digit increase last month due to robust demand for German luxury brands, industry data showed Wednesday.

The number of foreign luxury vehicles sold here was 24,389 in July, up 23.3 percent from a year earlier, according to the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA).

The double-digit growth was attributable to solid demand for German models.

German automaker Mercedes-Benz ranked first in terms of car sale by selling 7,083 vehicles here last month.

Another German carmaker BMW came next with the sale of 6,022 units, followed by Audi with 2,632 vehicles, Volvo with 1,153 units and Lexus with 1,027 units respectively.

The number of European brands sold here was 20,044 in July, accounting for 82.2 percent of the total. The U.S. and Japanese brands won the market share of 9.4 percent and 8.4 percent each.

For the first seven months of this year, 172,146 imported vehicles were sold in the domestic market. It was up 16.3 percent from the same period of last year.
