DUBLIN, April 20 (Xinhua) -- Irish airports handled over 9.13 million passengers in 2021, up 10 percent over the year 2020 but still 76 percent lower when compared with the pre-pandemic 2019 figure, said the country's Central Statistics Office (CSO) on Wednesday.

In 2019, Irish airports handled more than 38 million passengers, the highest figure on record, according to the CSO.

Of all the passengers handled by Irish airports last year, 90 percent were handled by Dublin Airport, 4 percent by Shannon Airport and 3 percent by Cork Airport with the remaining 3 percent to be held by other airports in the country, said the CSO.

In 2021, 92 percent of passengers traveling on international flights through Irish airports were traveling to or from Europe, it said, adding that the two most popular countries of origin and destination were Britain and Spain.

Outside Europe, the United States was the most popular country of origin and destination, said the CSO.

The CSO figures also showed that a total of 160,855 tonnes of freight were handled by Irish airports in 2021, up 16 percent compared with 2020 and an increase of 10 percent compared with 2019.
