WELLINGTON, June 14 (Xinhua) -- New Zealand's annual rate of food price inflation continued to increase between April and May, the statistics department Stats NZ said on Tuesday.

Food prices were 6.8 percent higher in May compared with a year ago, up from an increase of 6.4 percent in April year on year, Stats NZ said.

In May, the annual increase was due to rises across all the broad food categories including grocery food, restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food, fruit and vegetable, meat, poultry and fish, and non-alcoholic beverage, it said.

Grocery food was the largest contributor to the increase, followed by restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food, it added.

"Average prices for grocery food items like yogurt, milk, and cheese were all notably higher than they were in May 2021," consumer prices manager Katrina Dewbery said.
