S.Korea's online shopping rises 10.5 pct in May

SEOUL, July 1 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's online shopping logged a double-digit growth in May as the eased measures against the COVID-19 pandemic resumed outside activity, statistical office data showed Friday.

Shopping in cyberspace came to 17.29 trillion won (13.3 billion U.S. dollars) in May, up 10.5 percent from a year earlier, according to Statistics Korea.

The government lifted all anti-virus measures, except an indoor mask mandate, since April, bolstering online demand for travel, transport, culture and leisure services.

Online transaction of travel and transport services almost doubled to 1.56 trillion won in May compared to the same month of last year.

Transaction of culture and leisure services in cyberspace soared 165.2 percent to 263.6 billion won in the cited month.

Online purchase of food and beverage jumped 16.8 percent in May on a yearly basis, and clothing purchase in cyberspace advanced 17.1 percent.

Demand for online food delivery services fell 3.7 percent over the year to 2.06 trillion won in May, marking the first monthly reduction since relevant data began to be compiled in January 2017. (1 U.S. dollar equals 1,298 won)
