TOKYO, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Japan's core consumer prices rose 2.4 percent in July from a year earlier, surpassing the Bank of Japan's 2 percent inflation goal for a fourth straight month as material and energy prices continued to surge, the government said in a report Friday.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the rise in the country's core consumer prices in July was the sharpest in about seven and half years, with the nationwide core consumer price index, excluding volatile fresh food items, rising for the 11th straight month.

The ministry said that food items, excluding perishable items, rose 3.7 percent, marking the largest increase since March 2015, while energy prices jumped 16.2 percent from a year earlier.

The core-core CPI, meanwhile, excluding both energy and fresh food items increased for a fourth straight month, rising 1.2 percent, the ministry also said.
