The anticipated yields are expected to rise by 41.6 percent to 51.1 bushels per acre and the harvested area is expected to increase by 9.4 percent to 24.9 million acres, the national statistical agency said, using satellite imagery and agroclimatic data to make the estimates.
The increase in expected total wheat production is largely attributable to spring wheat, which is anticipated to rise by 57.3 percent to 25.6 million tonnes, and durum wheat production is anticipated to rise by 113 percent to 6.5 million tonnes, the agency said.
Due to record-high temperatures, combined with little rain, the yield in 2021 decreased by 38.1 percent from 2020 to 31.6 bushels per acre, the lowest wheat yield in two decades, according to Statistics Canada.
As a result, Canadian wheat production in 2021 fell by 38.5 percent from 2020 to 21.7 million tonnes, or an annual loss of 14 million tonnes.
