MANILA, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- The unemployment rate in the Philippines went up to 5.3 percent in August, compared to the previous month's record of 5.2 percent, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said Thursday.

PSA data showed 2.68 million Filipinos were out of work in August, higher than the 2.60 million recorded in July. However, the number is much lower than the 3.9 million in August 2021.

Many of the areas in the Philippines are now under COVID-19 alert level one, the lowest and most lenient of the five-tiered coronavirus restrictions. The lenient rules allow the country to open many businesses providing jobs to people.

Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Arsenio Balisacan stressed the need to strengthen the government's efforts to generate more jobs and high-quality jobs that provide adequate income for Filipino workers and reduce poverty significantly.
