The Council of the European Union in August adopted a regulation on reducing gas demand this winter. Member states agreed to cut their gas demand by 15 percent compared to their average consumption in the past five years, between August 2022 and March 2023.
However, Poland's Deputy Justice Minister Sebastian Kaleta, tweeted on Thursday that the regulation was issued in breach of the EU treaties and was not adopted in unanimity.
"The EU is trying to take advantage of the energy crisis to fully take over the competence to shape the energy mix," he said.
In August, Poland and Hungary were the only two member states voting against the adoption of the regulation, when it was passed with a qualified majority.
Poland argued at that time that the legal basis for the law was "defective" and said that decisions affecting the energy mix of the member states should be taken with the unanimous approval of all countries.
