U.S. dollar edges up amid economic data

NEW YORK, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. dollar rose slightly in late trading on Thursday as market participants digested the latest economic data.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, increased 0.01 percent to 104.5868.

In late New York trading, the euro decreased to 1.0596 U.S. dollars from 1.0601 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound decreased to 1.2017 U.S. dollars from 1.2037 dollars in the previous session.

The U.S. dollar bought 134.64 Japanese yen, lower than 134.95 Japanese yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar increased to 0.9335 Swiss francs from 0.9315 Swiss francs, and it was down to 1.3547 Canadian dollars from 1.3565 Canadian dollars. The U.S. dollar fell to 10.4303 Swedish Kronor from 10.4327 Swedish Kronor.

The U.S. Labor Department reported Thursday that the number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits fell by 3,000 to 192,000 in the week ending Feb. 18. The reading marked the lowest level in three weeks, signaling a still very tight labor market. Economists polled by The Wall Street Journal had estimated new claims would rise to 197,000.
