S. Korean banks' lending rate rebounds in May

SEOUL, June 30 (Xinhua) -- South Korean banks' lending rate marked the first rebound in six months last month on higher expectations for policy rate hikes, central bank data showed Friday.

The weighted average rate for new bank loans was an annualized 5.12 percent in May, up 0.11 percentage points from the previous month, according to the Bank of Korea (BOK).

The BOK left its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 3.50 percent for the third time in May, after delivering seven back-to-back rate hikes for one and a half years through January this year.

Expectations turned higher for policy rate hikes here as the U.S. Federal Reserve heralded additional rate hikes later this year.

Rate for fresh bank loans to households added 0.01 percentage point over the month to 4.83 percent in May.

Mortgage loan rate for households dipped 0.03 percentage points to 4.21 percent, but the credit loan rate gained 0.14 percentage points to 6.44 percent.

The bank's new corporate loan rate increased 0.11 percentage points to 5.20 percent last month.

The lending rate for big companies climbed 0.16 percentage points to 5.17 percent, and the rate for small companies advanced 0.09 percentage points to 5.23 percent.

The weighted average rate for new bank deposits rose 0.13 percentage points from a month earlier to an annualized 3.56 percent in May.
