ISLAMABAD, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan's Minister for Commerce Syed Naveed Qamar said Wednesday that the country has been striving to enhance its pharmaceutical exports to promote sustainable economic growth.

The export potential of Pakistan's pharmaceutical industry is huge and the country has been taking steps to enhance pharmaceutical exports to 5 billion U.S. dollars by 2030, the minister said while addressing a ceremony of the 6th Pakistan Pharma Summit.

Qamar stressed the need to prioritize local manufacturing of active pharmaceutical ingredients to reduce dependence on imports besides aligning with international standards.

"Pharmaceutical market of Pakistan is growing very fast and together we could make Pakistan a leading player in the global pharmaceutical market," the minister said, adding that by complying with global regulations and certifications, the country can access more lucrative export markets.

Qamar also called for collective efforts from the government, industry players, and regulatory bodies to enhance growth and innovation in the pharmaceutical sector.

Pakistan has been working on rationalizing tariffs and creating a conducive regulatory environment that fosters innovation and growth, he said.
