The combined revenue among major offline and online retailers gained 9.5 percent in September from a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
Revenue for online retailers expanded 12.0 percent, while sales by offline retailers increased 7.2 percent on surging food demand ahead of the Chuseok holiday, a traditional autumn harvest festival in South Korea.
Online food sales soared 32.0 percent last month, and online demand for household items advanced 11.8 percent.
Food sales in offline stores jumped 16.2 percent, but offline demand for home appliances and sports items declined 13.1 percent and 5.0 percent each.
Revenue among discount outlets, department stores and convenience stores went up 10.0 percent, 3.1 percent and 8.5 percent respectively last month.
