S. Korea's export rises 18.8 pct in 20 days of July

SEOUL, July 22 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's export rose in double digits in the first 20 days of this month due to solid demand for locally-made semiconductors, customs office data showed Monday.

Outbound shipment soared 18.8 percent over the year to 37.17 billion U.S. dollars in the July 1-20 period, according to the Korea Customs Service.

The daily average export went up 11.6 percent in the 20-day period. The monthly export kept an upward trend for the ninth consecutive month through May.

Import gained 14.2 percent to 37.22 billion dollars in the July 20-day period, sending the trade deficit to 50 million dollars.

Semiconductor export spiked 57.5 percent to 6.78 billion dollars in the cited period, and shipment for oil products, automotive components, computers and home appliances advanced in double figures.

Automotive shipment added 1.8 percent to 3.49 billion dollars, but those for mobile devices and precision machinery slipped in single digits.

Import for crude oil, chips, natural gas, oil products, precision machinery and cars recorded a double-digit increase in the 20-day period.
