Local farms bred 3,562,000 beef cattle in the April-June quarter, down 5.0 percent compared with the same quarter of last year, according to Statistics Korea.
The reduction came as lower beef prices discouraged cow breeding, the statistical office said.
The number of milk cows reared in the country slipped 1.1 percent over the year to 378,000 in the second quarter, while the figure for pigs shrank 0.4 percent to 11,061,000.
The readings for layer and broiler chickens increased in single digits to 78,225,000 and 112,231,000 each, while the number of ducks expanded 8.2 percent to 9,535,000 in the second quarter.
