The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 203.40 points, or 0.50 percent, to 40,743.33. The S&P 500 sank 27.10 points, or 0.50 percent, to 5,436.44. The Nasdaq Composite Index shed 222.78 points, or 1.28 percent, to 17,147.42.
Seven of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in green, with energy and financials leading the gainers by going up 1.54 percent and 1.19 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, technology and consumer staples led the laggards by dropping 2.20 percent and 0.66 percent, respectively.
