SEOUL, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's export logged a double-digit growth in the first 10 days of August owing to strong demand for locally-made semiconductors and automobiles, customs office data showed Monday.

Export stood at 15.47 billion U.S. dollars in the August 1-August 10 period, up 16.7 percent compared with the same period of last year, according to Korea Customs Service.

The daily average export increased 24.0 percent in the 10-day period. The monthly outbound shipment kept growing for the 10th straight month through July.

Semiconductor export spiked 42.1 percent to 3.48 billion dollars, and automotive shipment surged 63.9 percent to 876 million dollars.

Shipment for oil products, steel, ships, mobile devices, auto parts, computers and home appliances gained ground in the cited period.

Import advanced 13.4 percent from a year earlier to 18.40 billion dollars in the first 10 days of August, sending the trade deficit to 2.93 billion dollars.

Import for crude oil, chips and natural gas expanded in double figures, but those for coal, cars and mobile devices declined in double digits.
