The number of deaths caused by industrial accidents was 598 in 2023, down 7.1 percent compared to the previous year, according to the Ministry of Employment and Labor.
It kept dropping for the second successive year after the Serious Accidents Punishment Act took effect in January 2022 to impose imprisonment or fine on employers who fail to prevent grave accidents at workplaces.
Lower capacity ratio among manufacturers and the sluggish construction activity also contributed to the diminished industrial accident deaths.
The number of industrial accident deaths in the construction industry declined 11.1 percent over the year to 303 in 2023, while the reading in the manufacturing industry shrank 0.6 percent to 170.
The number of deaths at workplaces with fewer than 50 full-time workers decrease 8.8 percent to 354 last year, and the figure for workplaces with more than 50 full-time workers slipped 4.7 percent to 244.
