SEOUL, April 22 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's export rose in double digits in the first 20 days of this month on the back of solid demand for locally-made semiconductors, customs office data showed Monday.

Outbound shipment expanded 11.1 percent from a year earlier to 35.82 billion U.S. dollars in the April 1-20 period, according to Korea Customs Service.

The daily average export went up 11.1 percent in the 20-day period. The monthly export kept an upward trend for the sixth consecutive month through March.

Import gained 6.1 percent to 38.47 billion dollars in the 20-day period, sending the trade deficit to 2.65 billion dollars.

Semiconductor export soared 43.0 percent to 5.85 billion dollars in the cited period, while those for cars, oil products, computers and home appliances advanced in double figures.

Shipment for steel products, auto parts shrank in single digits, but those for mobile devices and precision machinery gained ground.

Import for semiconductor equipment, automobiles and coal recorded a double-digit reduction in the 20-day period.
