China built the world’s largest 4G network during the 12th Five-year Plan period and will welcome the era of 5G network during the 13th Five-year Plan period, reported by Xinhua News Agency. At the 2017 Mobile World Congress (MWC) held in Shanghai on June 28, experts argued that 5G technology will make more innovative applications possible and the industry is accelerating developing the blue ocean market with 1 trillion yuan market size brought by the 5G technology.
5G technology will make more innovative applications possible
5G refers to the fifth generation of mobile communication. Amid the inter-generational changes of global mobile communication technology, 4G once played an important role in leading the rapid development of information communication industry. Nowadays, 5G technology, as the new round of information technology revolution and industrial revolution, is sweeping across the globe.
“5G technology will make a great number of innovative applications become possible, such as unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), driverless vehicle and artificial intelligence (AI).” Secretary General of GSMA, which is an authoritative organization in global mobile communication field, said that 5G era will deeply change the society and people’s life.
Compared with 4G network, each energy level of 5G network will be increased by dozens of times or nearly 100 times. In the opinions of experts, the upcoming 5G era will facilitate rapid development of many industries such as telemedicine, car networking, big data, cloud computing, smart home and UAV. AI, intelligent manufacturing and other industries are expected to be burgeoning.
China has established the world’s largest 4G network with cutting-edge technology and now is embracing the 5G era. According to the planning, 5G for large-scale commercial use will be realized at the end of the 13th Five-year Plan period. The 5G technology will be fully embedded in people’s daily life by that time.
Make deployment in 5G field
The 5G era will bring vast blue ocean market, so various industries are aggressively making deployment.
Recently, China Mobile Communications Corp, the world's largest telecom carrier by subscribers, launched 5G base station and carried out 5G outfield tests in Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center. Shang Bing, chairman of China Mobile, said that information communication industry is an important participant and driver of digital economy. In order to seize the development opportunity in 5G era, telecommunication operators should move faster in improving their weakness, exploring transformation and cultivating new economic driver.
China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) predicted in the white paper on 5G’s influence on economy and society that 5G will drive 6.3 trillion yuan in economic output and 2.9 trillion yuan in economic value added in China by 2030. Industrial experts indicate that the market with such huge market size will generate a lot of commercial opportunities and new applications.
Bi Qi, head of innovation center of China Telecom, said that development of 5G technology will realize the connection between things and things. Now China Telecom is making efforts in developing 5G technology. It will finish building the world’s largest 4G Internet of Things soon and then push 4G technological application towards 5G. The company has prepared 5G experiments and test network in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong. Meanwhile, operators hope that the country will release 5G licenses as soon as possible.
Ma Hongbing, vice general manager of network construction department with China Unicom, remarked that the company hopes there is open 5G platform, including setting up network open platform and service open platform, which enable more enterprises to achieve win-win results.
China to take lead in 5G standard
China ran after other countries in 3G era and ran neck and neck with others in 4G era. But it is expected to take the lead in 5G era.
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) released the Planning for Development of Information Communication Industry during 2016 and 2020 in January 2017, proposing to make breakthrough in key technologies and products of 5G and make the country one of the leaders of 5G standard and technology in the world.
Industrial experts said that China has achieved significant breakthrough in several core technologies of 5G and is now orderly advancing the second phase of test of research and development of 5G technology.
Wang Zhiqin, an expert with the China Academy of Telecommunication Research of MIIT, said that many Chinese scientific innovative enterprises play a leading role in standards and actual test of 5G.
It is learnt that Huawei Technologies Co. has finished the second phase of testing wireless technology of 5G technology.
ZTE Corp. has located pre-5G network in many countries across the world and applied 5G technology to the current 4G network to lay better foundation for the global expansion of 5G in the future.
Zhang Jianguo, senior vice president of ZTE Corp., said that the company will further increase investment in 5G field this year and call on quickening to build worldwide uniform 5G standard, which will drive industrial chain to reduce costs and boost the commercialization of 5G technology.
