U.S. dollar rises amid coronavirus uncertainty

NEW YORK, April 20 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. dollar appreciated in late trading on Monday as market participants continued to search for safe haven amid uncertainties from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, was up 0.16 percent at 99.9603 in late trading.

In late New York trading, the euro fell to 1.0861 U.S. dollars from 1.0867 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound decreased to 1.2445 dollars from 1.2482 U.S. dollars in the previous session. The Australian dollar decreased to 0.6348 U.S. dollar from 0.6353 dollar.

The U.S. dollar bought 107.64 Japanese yen, higher than 107.59 Japanese yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar increased to 0.9678 Swiss franc from 0.9676 Swiss franc, and it increased to 1.4133 Canadian dollars from 1.4022 Canadian dollars.
