Tokyo stocks opened modestly higher in early trading Tuesday amid hopes for further monetary easing following a two-day Bank of Japan policy meeting that will wrap up later in the day. At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 164.81 points, or 0.92 percent, from Monday to 18,130.51. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 9.14 points, or 0.62 percent, to 1,471.55. Gainers were led by foods, agriculture and fisheries and pulp and paper issues.
