Tokyo stocks opened modestly higher in early trading Wednesday as sentiment was boosted by gains in European and U.S. stocks overnight and the U.S. dollar's resurgence against the yen.
At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 148.86 points, or 0.83 percent, to 18,175.34.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 8.72 points, or 0.60 percent, to 1,470.96. Gainers were led by rubber products, mining and machinery.
